On September 15, ASHA joined 13 other national real estate organizations in urging Congress to reform the tax treatment of demolished buildings and demolition expenses. Under current law, these costs generally must be added to the basis of land and often cannot be recovered until the property is sold, creating a disincentive for redevelopment projects. The coalition’s proposal would allow taxpayers to deduct both remaining building basis and demolition costs, helping promote housing development, community revitalization, and productive real estate investment.
